In the final session of our Re/Assemble virtual series, The Performance Theatre community explored alternative scenarios for the decade ahead and our own place in those range of possible futures. The Performance Theatre founder Osvald Bjelland closed the session by reflecting on the vision for The Performance Theatre and its mandate as we move into TPT’s next chapter. Session 2: October 23īuilding on the 2020 theme Re/Assemble, the session continued our exploration of the role that leadership, both local and global, plays in creating a new dynamic between national and international, individual and community, competition and collaboration.Īfter a short performance by Vienna-based artist Rotraud Kern, the Turkish Foreign Minister HE Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and TPT advisory board member Cuneyd Zapsu examined the drivers underlying the rise of nationalism, and what might cause former allies to go to war. The conversation continued in smaller groups focused on more detailed topics, from how we create more dynamic urban governance to how we use technology to create human interaction for more people. Could we create literal seats at our board tables to represent the interests of youth activists, low-status communities, or even the planet itself? How can we listen better, and offer better partnership and allyship to those who are seeking to change the systems we are a part of? One of the key questions from this discussion was how leaders can open themselves and their organisations up to disruption by those who have historically been excluded. They were nominated for IBMA New Artist of the Year at the 2022 IBMA Bluegrass Music Awards Show in Raleigh.The programme started with a powerful performance by Beirut-based writer and performer Dima Mikhayel Matta, after which CEO of Mastercard Ajay Banga, Project Drawdown’s editor-in-chief Katharine Wilkinson and urban revitalisation strategist Majora Carter reflected on how we can reassemble our economies and societies in more sustainable, inclusive and just ways. I love seeing that there are so many people that are enthusiastic about bluegrass. “I think it’s good to see the crosscurrents where bluegrass and popular music have borrowed from one another,” said Fireside’s mandolinist and vocalist Jesse Iaquinto during an online PineCone Workshop. They say they’ve learned a lot playing festivals like World of Bluegrass in Raleigh where they get to hear and play with all kinds of string bands. “Depending on where you come from and your experience with folk music you may think we’re very traditional, or on the other hand, consider us a progressive act.”īluegrass Situation praised the band saying their 2020 album Elements “…bursts from the speakers with the intensity and feeling of the stage monitors pounding into your chest front row center on a hot Saturday night at the Grey Eagle (in Asheville).”įireside Collective won the 2016 band contest at Merlefest and was nominated for a Momentum Award at IBMA in Raleigh. Mandolinist Jesse Iaquinto says the band loves to play for wide-ranging audiences. The band is equally at home at IBMA, bluegrass festivals or rock clubs like Lincoln Theater, Cat’s Cradle or The Pour House. The Asheville-based quintet features Joe Cicero on guitar, Alex Genoga on banjo, Jesse Iaquinto on mandolin, Tommy Maher on resophonic guitar (dobro) and Carson White on upright bass. They helped PineCone restart post-pandemic shows as a part of the 2021 Down Home Series. Fireside Collective has been a frequent guest on PineCone stages.
